ORIG DESCRIPTION* ORIGINAL DIAGNOSIS: One-celled spore, dolium- or cupula-shaped in outline, with a nearly equal width in the two terminal ends; one pore, the structure and form of pore variable; exine solid, levigate or with weak ornamentation. Monotypic.
COMMENTS* Characterized by its dolium or cupula-shaped outline; Monoporisporites has a round outline, Lacrimasporonites a tear- or pear-shaped outline.

K&J REMARKS Close examination of the illustration of the type specimen suggests that the flat area at the narrowest part (top in Kalgutkar and Jansonius's (2000) figure) is actually (part of) a septum, which possesses a central pore. Also, the outline of the sides show a faint indentation just above the middle, and -- even though the specimen shown in the plate is nearly opaque -- there is a darker stripe at this point, suggesting the presence of another septum. These features indicate that this specimen belongs to Anatolinites.

Elsik et al. (1990) described spores of Anatolinites as having a rounded top, but, when not rounded, the loss of a cell can be inferred. These "morphologic expressions" were illustrated in their text-figure 1, which is here reproduced on Pl. 9, fig. 36..

Consequently, Kalgutkar and Jansonius (2000) consider Cupulisporonites, although validly published, to be a junior taxonomic synonym of Anatolinites, and transfer its type species to that genus. [Jansonius et al. 1998, card no. 5071.]
TYPE TYPE: Cupulisporonites megaporus Song & Cao 1994, p. 39 (English translation, l.c., p. 47), pl. 2, fig. 4.
