SPECIES, AUTHORITY H. xylophagus Felix 1894, p. 276, pl. 19, fig. 7.
LOCATION Tarnow, Galicia.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Conidia 6 µm wide and 9-12 µm long. They are of more regular ovoid shape, not prolonged at the ends. The hyphae lying alongside have rather short septa, 4-6 µm wide. The coloration is not preserved. [Unedited translation from German; GSC Calgary Library, Translation No. 4047621.]
COMMENTS* This species was found in deciduous wood that I described as Helictoxylon roemeri and that originates from the Tertiary of Tarnow in Galicia. The relationship of the forms described as Haplographites probably also include those fungus remains that were first described by Unger as Nyctomyces antediluvianus. They were found later also by Conwentz in fossil coniferous wood from Karlsdorf in Silesia and by Herma in Sweden. They are all characterized by the fact that long, chain-like rows of conidia are abstricted from the hyphae. Consequently, they closely resemble Xenodochus ligniperdus described by Willkomm; however, with respect to this fungus it has to be noted, that it does not belong in the Uredineae genus Xenodochus.

Haplographites xylophagus differs from H. cateniger in the considerably smaller size of the conidia, and the conidial shape being more regularly ovoid without prolongation at the ends. [Unedited translation from German; GSC Calgary Library, Translation No. 4047621.]
