SPECIES, AUTHORITY H. argillae R. Ludwig 1859, p. 57, pl. 8, figs. 1, 1a-1b, 1d-1e.
LOCATION Münzenberg Shale, Rheinisch-Wetterauer browncoal; Rhine valley, Germany.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Mushroom with a broad, irregularly oval, upwards slightly concave cap, the spore bearing skin spread over narrow spines that taper downward. The stem is in the centre of the cap.
COMMENTS* We have to deal here, as always with the poorly preservable mushrooms, with casts; these gave, however, excellent results in the Münzenberg Shale, as it had been hardened by underground fires. The spinules of the hymenium show as numerous tubules, arranged in concentric circles, as the space between them had become filled up with clay, and the space they occupied remained open after the organic matter decayed. The form of the hymenium made it clear to me that the species should be assigned to Hydnum. The upper surface of the cap was smooth and shiny.
