SPECIES, AUTHORITY M. traversii (Ediger & Alisan) Kalgutkar & Jansonius 2000
LOCATION Northern Thrace Basin, Turkey.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Unicellular, aseptate, subcircular to elliptical, monoporate fungal spores. Pore is simple and has a diameter of about 1 µm. Exine is around 2 µm thick, rigid, and slightly thickened around the pore but does not form an atrium-like structure. An inner part with a diameter of 10-16 µm, possibly the remains of the plasmatic content, is present at the center. Size 20-24 µm in diameter.
COMMENTS* These forms are highly similar to L. cupuliformis (Sheffy & Dilcher 1971) Ethridge Glass et al. 1986. But L. traversii is not flat on one side and this seems to be a result of flattening. The three-layered wall of L. cupuliformis is probably formed by the boundaries of the inner part. Therefore, these taxa can be considered as synonymous [sic]. Monoporisporites koenigii Elsik 1968 and M. stoveri Elsik 1968 differ from L. traversii by a thinner exine and bulging-out structure of the pore. Monoporisporites abruptus Sheffy & Dilcher 1971 is elliptical, smaller, and has a thinner exine. Similar forms were included into Type-170 from the Holocene samples by van Geel et al. (1983). Lacrimasporonites traversii differs from Types-705 and 706 from the Late Holocene deposits (Bakker & van Smeerdijk, 1982) by having a distinct apical pore.

Named in honor of Prof. Alfred Traverse.

K&J REMARKS The comments by Ediger & Alisan that "these taxa can be considered as synonymous" is unclear. If it refers to the close similarity of L. cupuliformis and L. traversii, then (according to ICBN, Art. 34.1) it could be considered that L. traversii is a junior synonym of L. cupuliformis.
