K&J REMARKS Spores of Varisulcosporites eminens, the type species described for this new genus, are characterized by the presence of an oblique furrow or groove. Elsik (1990a) emended Spirotremesporites Dueñas-Jimenez 1979, restricting it to spores with a single oblique furrow. Kalgutkar and Jansonius (2000) consider Varisulcosporites a junior taxonomic synonym of Spirotremesporites, and transfer the type to Spirotremesporites.

The generic name was not validly published in 1994 because it was not specified where the type specimen was stored. In 1997, the authors slightly rephrased the wording of the diagnosis, but the deletion of the word "oblique" may have been unintended [and is here restored in square brackets].
