SPECIES, AUTHORITY
C. catenatus (Ramanujam & Rao) Kalgutkar & Jansonius 2000
LOCATION
Quilon and Warkalli beds of Kerala State along the west coast of South India; locality: Varkallai.
ORIG DESCRIPTION
*
Spores melanin-colored, 4- to 6-celled, 40-65 x 15-21 µm. Cells more or less rounded, imparting a beaded look to spores; terminal cell dome-shaped, often darker than others, basal cell sub-hyaline to hyaline, slightly curved. Each transverse septum with two triangular or wedge-shaped thickenings towards one side of spore only; thickenings on adjacent septa often face each other. A single pore between thickenings in each septum. Spore wall 1 µm thick, septa slightly thicker, surface psilate to scabrate.
COMMENTS
*
The beaded nature, dark dome-shaped apical cell and sub-hyaline to hyaline curved basal cell are the distinguishing features of this spore type. Pluricellaesporites dentatus, described from the Eocene of Malaya (Trivedi & Verma, 1970), somewhat resembles the South Indian spores, but its cells are distinctly flattened. Occasional element in the Warkalli beds.
