SPECIES, AUTHORITY D. elongatus (Sheffy & Dilcher) Kalgutkar & Jansonius 2000
LOCATION Puryear clay pit, one-half mile south of Puryear, Henry County, Tennessee, USA.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Phragmospore 7.7 x 47.4 µm, seven cells flattened at common boundaries, convex on sides. One terminal cell tapered forming flat basal attachment. Psilate, septa opaque, wall 1 µm thick.
COMMENTS* This spore resembles the shape of teliospores of Xenodochus Schlect, in Ramanujam & Ramchar (1963, fig. 4); however, Multicellaesporites elongatus differs in number of cells and lacks pores.
PUBLICATION REFERENCE Sheffy MV, Dilcher DL. 1971. Morphology and taxonomy of fungal spores; Palaeontographica, Abt. B, v. 133 p. 34-51.
K&J REMARKS The rounded terminal cell (opposite the flat one with a hilum) shows a small axial pore with a thickened annulus. These features warrant a transfer to Diporicellaesporites.
