F. canalis Clarke 1965, p. 91, pl. 1, fig. 6.
LOCATION
Canon City coal field, Fremont County, Colorado, USA.
ORIG DESCRIPTION
*
Fungal spores uniseriate, fragments consist of five to many rectangular to square cells 16-28 µm high, 25-30 µm diameter, septa 2-4 µm thick, bidentate, sinuous tubular channel about 3 µm wide connecting cells, cell walls psilate, 0.5 µm thick, overall dimensions 25-30 x 150-230 µm.
COMMENTS
*
The specific name canalis is Latin for channel, or canal, and is given in reference to the tubular structure extending the length of the spore.
PUBLICATION REFERENCE
Clarke RT. 1965. Fungal spores from Vermejo Formation coal beds (Upper Cretaceous) of central Colorado; Mountain Geologist, v. 2, p. 85-93.
K&J REMARKS
The tubular structure may indicate the presence of a secondary (parasitic) fungus. The "bidentate" appearance of the septa is an artifact of compression.
