ORIG DESCRIPTION* ORIGINAL DIAGNOSIS: [combined description] Hyphae occupying inter- and intracellular cortical regions, hyphae (3.8-) 6.9 (-12) µm in diameter, often forming loops and coils within cells, septa frequently present; branching dichotomous, occasionally trichotomous; arbuscules with thick trunks (3.7-) 6.3 (-7.7) µm in diameter, abrupt narrowing of branches, branching secondary, ultimate branches less than 1 µm in diameter.
COMMENTS* The name Gigasporites is used to designate its similarity to the family Gigasporaceae; the ending -ites, to note its fossil status. The epithet myriamyces refers to the unknown number of biological species comprising this designation.
