SPECIES, AUTHORITY H. mohgaoensis Chitaley & Sheikh 1971, p. 141 (nom. nud.); holotype: 2 Dn/Sh, Dept. of Botany, Institute of Science, Nagpur; [not illustrated].
LOCATION Mohgaon Kalan, Madhya Pradesh, India.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* [combined description]: Mycelium of short, branched, septate hyphae with multicellular 1- to 4-celled spores of dark color. Sexual reproduction not known.
COMMENTS* The present fungus does not show any sexual reproductive stage and thus is difficult to assign to a definite fungal order. However, the septate shortly branched condition of the hyphae with multicellular spores suggests its identity with the existing Helminthosporium group (Alexopoulos, 1958; Wolf & Wolf, 1949). Fungi from this group are imperfect ones and are normally found infecting cereals. For the present, it is thus included in the group Helminthosporium under the new name Helminthosporites mohgaoensis.
PUBLICATION REFERENCE Chitaley SD, Sheikh MT. 1971. An infected grain from the Deccan Intertrappean cherts of Mohgaonkalan; The Journal of the Indian Botanical Society, v. 50, p. 137-142.
K&J REMARKS The Deccan Intertrappean series of India at Mohgaon Kalan is considered to be Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) in age. No illustration of this taxon was published; rather, the authors illustrated their taxonomic concept with photographs of extant Helminthosporium. Therefore, Kalgutkar and Jansonius (2000) consider this generic name (and that of the species) to be not-validly published nomina nuda.
