SPECIES, AUTHORITY
H. dubius Kalgutkar & Jansonius 2000
LOCATION
Cannanore beach area, Palayangadi and Cheruvattur (southern side of Karingottu River), Kerala State, India; locality: Palayangadi.
ORIG DESCRIPTION
*
Spores dark brown, dicellate, elliptical, 15.5-20.4 x 7-8.5 µm, inaperturate, upper cell more acutely tapering than the lower cell, base slightly protruding, frilled, transverse septum dark, opaque, in the form of a conspicuously thick (6.8 µm) band; spore wall up to 2.2 µm thick, psilate to finely granular.
COMMENTS
*
The dark opaque prominently thickened band-like transverse septum and the frilled nature of the base of the lower cell are the characteristic features of this interesting spore type. In those features the spore shows close similarity with the conidia of the dematiaceous hyphomycete Balanium (Ellis, 1971).

K&J REMARKS
Because the specific epithet ("crassiseptum") is compound, Kalgutkar and Jansonius (2000) interpret it as an adjective that grammatically must agree with the gender of the generic name (hence "crassiseptus"). When transferred to the new genus Hilidicellites, the name is an illegitimate junior homonym of H. crassiseptus (Ramanujam & Srisailam) comb. nov.; Kalgutkar and Jansonius (2000) therefore proposed to replace it with the new name H. dubius. This name reflects Kalgutkar and Jansonius's (2000) impression that the photograph of the type appears to show more than one septum, as well as the presence of a hilum; if, in spite of the description, that is demonstrated to be so, it should be assigned to Pluricellaesporites (as "P. crassiseptus").
