SPECIES, AUTHORITY H. claibornensis Elsik 1990a, p. 147, pl. 2, fig. 81.
LOCATION Claiborne Group, Henry County, Tennessee, USA.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Aseptate, psilate fungal spores ca. 6 x 12.5 µm overall. Reniform shape; the outline in side view is straight along one side with an obscure furrow for most of the length. The ends are narrowly rounded and the side away from the furrow is roundly convex. The spore wall is 0.25-0.5 µm thick, slightly thinning over the ends.
COMMENTS* Hypoxylonites pirozynskii and H. pirozynskioides are of a similar size but lack the degree of asymmetry exhibited by Hypoxylonites claibornensis.

Derivation: Named for its occurrence in Claiborne Group.
