SPECIES, AUTHORITY H. fusiformis Elsik 1990a, p. 150, pl. 1, fig. 38.
LOCATION The Gulf Coast.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Aseptate, psilate fungal spores ca. 8 x 20 µm overall. The spore wall is very thin, uniformly ca. 0.25 µm. Outline elliptical or narrowly elliptical with pointed or subpointed ends in an overall fusiform shape. The longitudinal furrow reaches the ends of the spore. The outline in side view was not seen.
COMMENTS* Hypoxylonites lineatus is similar but those spores have a thickening of the wall over the ends of the spore. Hypoxylonites eocenicus has a shape similar to H. fusiformis, but the furrow is schizoid, almost completely traversing the spore.

Derivation: Named for its fusiform outline.
