FIGURE REFERENCE Elsik WC. 1990. Hypoxylonites and Spirotremesporites, form genera for Eocene to Pleistocene fungal spores bearing a single furrow; Palaeontographica, Abt. B, v. 216, p.137-169.
SPECIES, AUTHORITY H. gulfensis Elsik 1990a, p. 150, pl. 1, fig. 23.
LOCATION The Gulf Coast.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Bilateral, reniform, aseptate, psilate fungal spores with a longitudinal furrow generally 1/2 or less of the length of the straight or concave side of the spore. Overall size 7-10 x 25-32 µm. Spore wall 0.25-0.5 µm or slightly thicker, thickening to a maximum of 1.5 µm over the ends of the spore in a few specimens; not thickened in other specimens. Aperture a narrow furrow with rounded ends. Ends of spore subpointed or narrowly rounded.
COMMENTS* Overall smaller size than Hypoxylonites sulekii and tendency towards very slight or no apical thickening of the spore wall. A tendency towards concavity of the furrowed side of the spore also characterizes this species. Derivation: Named after the Gulf, i.e. Gulf of Mexico.
PUBLICATION REFERENCE Elsik WC. 1990. Hypoxylonites and Spirotremesporites, form genera for Eocene to Pleistocene fungal spores bearing a single furrow; Palaeontographica, Abt. B, v. 216, p.137-169.
K&J REMARKS Kalgutkar and Jansonius's (2000) figure represents Elsik's figure 22, in which the furrow is seen in slightly less oblique view than in the holotype; the latter shows more clearly the concavity of the side bearing the furrow.
