FIGURE REFERENCE

SPECIES, AUTHORITY
H. minutus Elsik 1990a, p. 152, pl. 2, fig. 104.
LOCATION
The Gulf Coast.
ORIG DESCRIPTION
*
Aseptate, aporate, psilate fungal spores ca. 5.5-6.5 x 11.5-13.5 µm. Characteristically has a very short, linear furrow ca. 6.5 µm long. The outline is elliptical to narrowly elliptical with smoothly rounded ends; the side bearing the furrow is more convex, imparting a reniform shape to the spore. The spore wall is ca. 0.25 µm or less.
COMMENTS
*
Hypoxylonites minutus has a thinner spore wall than Hypoxylonites pirozynskii. The furrow of this species is on the concave side of the spore, whereas the furrow of H. pirozynskii is on the most convex [sic] side of the spore. [Under H. pirozynskii, Elsik stated that the furrow in that species is located on the straight to more concave side of the spore.]
Derivation: Named for its small size.

K&J REMARKS
Kalgutkar and Jansonius's (2000) figure illustrates Elsik's fig. 103, in which the furrow is more clearly shown.
