FIGURE REFERENCE Elsik WC. 1990. Hypoxylonites and Spirotremesporites, form genera for Eocene to Pleistocene fungal spores bearing a single furrow; Palaeontographica, Abt. B, v. 216, p.137-169.
SPECIES, AUTHORITY H. oblongus Elsik 1990a, p. 153, pl. 2, fig. 88.
LOCATION The Sespe sand facies offshore California, USA.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Aseptate, psilate fungal spores ca. 15-24 x 25-42 µm overall. Outline elliptical, broadly elliptical or fusiform; ends broadly rounded to rounded. Spore wall ca. 0.5 µm or less, freely folded. Folds mask the presence of a very short longitudinal furrow. Furrow is a 3-9 µm narrow folded ridge 1 µm or less in width, usually ca. 0.25 µm, which traverses the middle of a square to rectangular area, ca. 3-5 x 3-9 µm, of thinned spore wall. The thinned area and its longitudinal fold can be found in the middle of the spore or between the middle and one end of the spore; but in various orientations due to the originally oval shape of the spores.
COMMENTS* No other species of Hypoxylonites exhibits this combination of size, freely and randomly folded wall, and short furrow. The short furrow is very easily missed and must be searched for diligently whenever the presence of this stratigraphically useful species is suspected.

Derivation: Named for its oblong shape.
