SPECIES, AUTHORITY H. pirozynskioides Elsik 1990a, p. 155, pl. 2, fig. 83.
LOCATION Claiborne Group of Henry County, Tennessee, USA. Also reworked into Neogene sediments offshore Louisiana, USA.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Aseptate, psilate fungal spores ca. 6-7 x 11 µm. Outline irregularly elliptical, notched at one or both ends by a gaping longitudinal furrow which reaches to or just beyond, i.e. around, each end of the spore. Spore wall 0.25-0.5 µm, not generally folded.
COMMENTS* The furrow of Hypoxylonites pirozynskioides is much longer than the furrow of H. pirozynskii. Hypoxylonites vicksburgensis is similar but it is larger.

Derivation: Named for its similarity to Hypoxylonites pirozynskii.
