FIGURE REFERENCE Elsik WC. 1990. Hypoxylonites and Spirotremesporites, form genera for Eocene to Pleistocene fungal spores bearing a single furrow; Palaeontographica, Abt. B, v. 216, p.137-169.
SPECIES, AUTHORITY H. pleistocenicus Elsik 1990a, p. 155, pl. 2, figs. 85a,b.
LOCATION Beaumont Clay, Harris County, Texas, USA.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Aseptate, psilate fungal spores ca. 9-11 x 16-19 µm overall. The spore wall is ca. 0.5 µm; faintly ribbed in a transverse manner across the area around the furrow. Outline oval to reniform, spore usually oriented in side view. Longitudinal furrow to the ends of the spore. The outline of the side of the spore with the furrow tends to be less convex, imparting the reniform asymmetry. Furrow gaping, i.e. margins of the wall overlapped, or closed.
COMMENTS* The faint transverse ribbing on the face of the spore bearing the furrow seems to be unique for Hypoxylonites pleistocenicus. Hypoxylonites eopleistocenicus is very similar, but lacks the transverse ribbing and has a thicker spore wall. Hypoxylonites brazosensis is larger and the furrow is on the most convex side of the spore. The furrow of H. asymetricus (Salard-Cheboldaeff & Locquin 1980) Elsik 1990a is also on the most convex side.

Derivation: Named for its occurrence in Pleistocene sediments.
