SPECIES, AUTHORITY H. vicksburgensis Elsik 1990a, p. 158, pl. 2, fig. 65.
LOCATION Vicksburg Group of south Texas, USA.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Aseptate, psilate fungal spores ca. 5-7 x 13-16 µm overall, occasionally 8-9 µm wide due to splitting of compressed spores. Outline in top view elliptical with rounded ends; in oblique or side view the outline is slightly asymmetrical to reniform, with the longitudinal furrow on the least convex side of the spore. The furrow is a narrow slit reaching to or within 1 µm of the ends of the spore; often with bordering folds along the margins; compressed, split spores have a wider furrow that is expanded at each end. Spore wall 0.25-0.5 µm.
COMMENTS* Hypoxylonites vicksburgensis resembles both Hypoxylonites pirozynskii and H. pirozynskioides, but is larger than both of these.

Derivation: Named for its occurrence in the Vicksburg Group.
