SPECIES, AUTHORITY I. vulgaris (Sheffy & Dilcher) Kalgutkar & Jansonius 2000
LOCATION Puryear clay pit, one-half mile south of Puryear, Henry County, Tennessee, USA.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Spherical spore, unicellular, inaperturate, pigment solid, medium to dark, psilate; diameter ranges from 6.8-14.5 µm (ten specimens). Holotype: diameter 11.6 µm.
COMMENTS* The specific name indicates that the spore is a common form. Some of these single-celled spores may correspond to ascospores reported by Scott (1956). He illustrated ascospores of Cryptocolax clarensis and Cryptocolax parvula. The former is 5.8 µm wide, 8-10 µm long, the latter is globose to ellipsoidal 6.0-7.5 µm long, 4.5-6.0 µm wide. Scott also suggested that identical material has been interpreted by Berry (1916a) as oospores of Peronosporoides palmi. Other circular shaped spores illustrated by Berry are recorded as conidia of Cladosporites fasciculatus. Although Berry described them as fusiform in outline and somewhat variable in length, 2 x 4 to 2 x 12 µm, they appear similar to Inapertisporites vulgaris.

K&J REMARKS Possibly not validly published, because the illustration of the holotype (although the coordinates of its location on the single slide on which this publication is based, are given) is not identified on the plate or in the description. [However, pending a review of the ICBN on just this point, R.A. Fensome advocates to accept the name, if with reservation.]
