SPECIES, AUTHORITY M. perseae Arnaud 1918, p. 218, pl. 50, figs. A-K.
LOCATION France.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Subcuticular mycelium with alternating long cells without much color, and shorter, darker cells carrying lateral stigmopodia; stigmopodia one-celled (or may be simple diverticula of the mycelium); from each stigmopodium an extension descends into the cavity of an epidermic cell, but a suction device (haustorium) could not be observed. Mycelium has two further types of branching: 1) vegetative branches, mostly pseudo-dichotomous; 2) simple opposed side branches ending in a pycnostroma; both these types of branching originate in the long cells. Pycnostroma resembles that of Asterostomella, but is subcutaneous, as is the mycelium; stylospores 6-7 x 11-12 µm, brown with a cleanly delineated, clear band.
COMMENTS* In newly developed mycelial hyphae at first only the transverse septa are distinguished by coloration, resulting in seemingly enigmatic trails of parallel lines separated by alternating short and long distances; next the short cells darken, and these remain darkest even in the mature mycelium. Ascostromata have little color.
