SPECIES, AUTHORITY M. arcuatus (Doubinger & Pons) Kalgutkar & Jansonius 2000
LOCATION Cerrejon basin, Colombia.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Spore unicellular, spatulate in form, monoporate, smooth and brown in color. Length 14 µm, width 8 µm. The wall is thin (0.6 µm). The cell is slightly arcuate and asymmetrical. The apical pore is 0.5 µm in diameter. The cell wall thickens at this point (0.7 µm). [Unedited translation from French; GSC Calgary Library, Translation No. T4047624.]
COMMENTS* The form and size suggest a similarity to the species Lacrimasporonites basidii Elsik 1968 of the Paleocene in Texas, but the asymmetry of our specimen is much more pronounced. The difference between the spores of Basidiomycetes fungi and certain Ascomycetes is difficult to establish. Some basidiospores have lighter proximal areas. This characteristic was not found on the forms from the Cerrejon basin, but asymmetry is very common in the Basidiomycetes.
