SPECIES, AUTHORITY M. elencantensis (Sepúlveda) Kalgutkar & Jansonius 2000
LOCATION Andean Andesitic Series, northern Patagonian Cordillera, Chubut Province, Argentina.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Inaperturate, single-celled fungal spores of ovoid to spatulate shape; length-width ratio approximately 2:1; smooth walls made of two layers, slightly thicker at the extremes; gentle flattening at one end. Spore size: 14-20 x 8-13 µm (52 specimens).

Holotype 19 x 10 µm.; smooth wall, 1.2 µm thick, composed of two layers of approximately equal thickness, which grow slightly thicker at the ends to approximately 2 µm, giving the ends a slightly darker coloring. There is a gentle flattening at one end of approximately 2 µm.
COMMENTS* Inapertisporites sp. 1 Elsik (1968, p. 269, pl. 2, fig. 7), of the Palaeocene (Texas) differs in having no thickening of the wall at the ends, nor flattening at one end; in addition, it has a "basal area" lacking in our material. Lange & Smith (1971, p. 678, pl. 4, figs. 194, 195, 212, 220, 221, 222, 229, 231, 233, 239, 147, 149, 158, 259 and 187), illustrated an ensemble of amerospores of the Middle Eocene (Australia) that share many attributes with our material and, especially as they lack a functional aperture, might be included under this species.

Lacrimasporonites sp. (pl. 1, fig. 12), resembles this material; the fundamental difference is the presence of a pore at the flattened end of Lacrimasporonites sp. Possibly, the two morphospecies constitute two stages in the development of the same type of spore.
