FIGURE REFERENCE Singh RB, Patil GV. 1980. On remains of Coelomycetes in Mohgaonkalan lntertraps, M.P., India; The Botanique, v. 9, p. 13-20.
SPECIES, AUTHORITY P. intertrappeana R.B. Singh & Patil 1980, p. 17, pl. 1, figs. 1-2, text-figs. 1-4.
LOCATION Mohgaonkalan, Chindwara district, M.P., India.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* ORIGINAL DIAGNOSIS: Pycnidia 5-7 in row, black, ostiolate, spherical-oval, immersed, 110-165 x 70-90 µm in size; wall pseudoparenchymatous, 3-4 cells thick; conidiophore unbranched, 4 µm long; conidia oval-spherical, 2-3 µm in size, one-celled, single or in chains of 2-3; mycelium branched, septate, intercellular. Host: dicotyledonous wood.
COMMENTS* [Description of material as 'Fungus 1', l.c., p. 13]: A [silicified] mass of pseudoparenchyma on rotting wood showed several pycnidia in groups, each with a separate opening (Pl. 1, fig. 1; text-fig. 1). They are pyriform, more in vertical diameter than transverse and lined by indefinite pseudoparenchymatous wall. On the inner wall of these fruiting bodies or pycnidia are present septate conidiophores. Conidia are oval-spherical, single or in chains of 2-3 at the tip of the conidiophores (Pl. 1, fig. 2; text-fig. 2). In close association, but in the decaying wood, branched septate, hyaline, intercellular hyphae are present (text-fig. 3).

(Discussion and comparisons; l.c., p. 14:) Fungus 1: Palaeocytosphaera intertrappeana does not resemble any fossil fungus reported so far. Closer study reveals that the fossil fungus is closely comparable to the genus Cytosphaera of Sphaeropsidales (Coelomycetes or Fungi Imperfecti). Cytosphaera is characterized by the presence of many ostiolate pyriform and immersed pycnidia which are restricted to the upper region of the stroma. Conidiophores are septate, with oval to spherical conidia produced singly or in chains of 2-3.

K&J REMARKS Kalgutkar and Jansonius (2000) only had access to a (poor) xerox copy of the protologue, in which the (poorly printed) plate lost any informative value. As it could not be used in making their own illustrations, Kalgutkar and Jansonius (2000) relied on the published text-figures.

Singh and Patil (1980) used a strange format for describing the new taxon, as the text is scattered under three headings over several pages.
