ORIGINAL DIAGNOSIS: Stroma radiate, more or less rounded, ostiolate, ostiole not surrounded by specialized cells, free hyphae absent.
COMMENTS
*
Dilcher (1965) instituted a new artificial genus Microthallites with two new species: M. lutosus, non-ostiolate and M. spinulatus, ostiolate. In view of the present studies it seems quite important, at least in case of fossil forms, to consider the presence or absence of an ostiole as a generic character to classify the dispersed microthyriaceous ascomata or thyriothecia. It is, therefore, suggested here to maintain Microthallites Dilcher 1965 only for non-ostiolate forms. The ostiolate species M. spinulatus Dilcher 1965 has been transferred to Paramicrothallites gen. nov. as its genotype.
