ORIG DESCRIPTION* Spores muriform, septa thick, dividing the spore into 8 cells that each have a small depression simulating a pore; 30-38 x 12-24 µm.
COMMENTS* Affinity: Adelomycetes [Deuteromycotina].

K&J REMARKS Through lack of typographic organization and punctuation, it was not clear in the protologue which of two illustrated specimens (fig. 14, or fig. 16) is the type specimen. Dr. Salard-Cheboldaeff (letter to JJ, 99 02 25) confirmed that fig. 14 shows the holotype in two focal levels. Kalgutkar and Jansonius (2000) consider that the species is conspecific with Dictyosporites ovoideus, and that Pleosporonites ovoideus is a junior synonym of the latter. The types of both show the pores that are mentioned in the description of D. ovoideus only. Both types appear to have more than the eight cells specified in their descriptions. Both types are illustrated in Kalgutkar and Jansonius's (2000) Pl. 15, fig. 30. The description of Pleosporonites ovoideus, however, is given only here, under the heading of its original name.
