SPECIES, AUTHORITY P. malevisus Kalgutkar & Jansonius 2000
LOCATION Puryear clay pit, one-half mile south of Puryear, Henry County, Tennessee, USA.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Fusiform, tetracellate spore 5.8 x 20.3 µm, psilate, inaperturate. Slight constriction between two central cells, central cells overlap smaller tapered cells on either side of spore, wall 0.5 µm thick.
COMMENTS* This spore resembles the material which Bradley (1931, pl. 19, fig. 2) identified as Leptosphaeria.
PUBLICATION REFERENCE Sheffy MV, Dilcher DL. 1971. Morphology and taxonomy of fungal spores; Palaeontographica, Abt. B, v. 133 p. 34-51.
K&J REMARKS The photograph of the type of this spore clearly indicates the presence of a hilate attachment scar (at the proximal end), as seen in species of Pluricellaesporites. However, the line drawing by Sheffy & Dilcher of this type, which is a poor representation of the actual photograph, shows the grain to be closed at both ends, and with the outline of the spore drastically changed. Kalgutkar and Jansonius (2000) transfer this species to Pluricellaesporites, but because the binomial Pluricellaesporites fusiformis Ke & Shi has priority, Kalgutkar and Jansonius (2000) propose for Sheffy & Dilcher's species the new name P. malevisus (from Latin male = poorly, and visus = observed).
