SPECIES, AUTHORITY S. modicus Kalgutkar & Jansonius 2000
LOCATION Kanguk Peninsula, Axel Heiberg Island, Northwest Territories, Canada.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Filamentous, brown, smooth, terminal spores with a pore-like attachment scar at the proximal end. Filaments of 25 or more irregularly sized cells; cells dissimilar, squarish to rectangular, slightly notched at the septa, with septal perforations. Filaments attenuated, with cells gradually smaller and narrower towards the distal end. Filaments subtended by light brown to hyaline, rounded to dome-shaped apical cells. Filaments 86-232 µm long, 9-11 µm wide in the middle region.
COMMENTS* (Kalgutkar 1997): Pluricellaesporites scalaris appears to resemble Diporicellaesporites scalaris Kalgutkar 1993 but the latter is diaperturate with pores at both proximal and distal ends. Originally named for the ladder (Latin scala)-like appearance of the spores; new epithet from Latin modicus = modest, moderate, for its modest length compared to other species in this genus.
