SPECIES, AUTHORITY S. subovoideus Elsik 1990a, p. 165.
LOCATION Claiborne Group of Henry County, Tennessee, USA.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Aseptate, psilate, fungal spores with an elliptical outline that is truncated on one end. The furrow is apparently wrapped around the spore, i.e. the spore axis, from one end of the spore to the other. Overall size is ca. 9 x 20 µm, spore wall is between 0.5 and 1 µm thick. The truncated end is ca. 3 µm wide.
COMMENTS* This is the only Spirotremesporites species with a truncated end.

K&J REMARKS The name Inapertisporites subovoideus was proposed by Sheffy & Dilcher (1971), who designated the holotype by slide number and coordinates, and identified it by giving its size by size (which points to the lower right specimen of three illustrated in pl. 15, fig. 7). The two lower specimens remain in the species Inapertisporites subovoides.

The uppermost of the three specimens was chosen by Elsik as the type specimen of the species Spirotremesporites subovoideus; its morphology does not agree with the description for Inapertisporites subovoideus.
