SPECIES, AUTHORITY T. padappakarensis (Jain & Gupta) Kalgutkar & Jansonius 2000
LOCATION Padappakkara, Quilon, Western Ghats, South India.
ORIG DESCRIPTION* Ascomata flattened, subcircular, ostiolate, outline sinuous, 40-100 µm in diameter, solitary, [made up of] interconnected radiating hyphae; cells 2.5 x 4 µm, elongated towards periphery; wall thin, tangential walls of peripheral cells strongly thickened and entire. Ostiole well defined, 7-10 µm in diameter, distinctly elevated, centric to slightly eccentric, bordered by two to four layers of dark brown, thick-walled, papillate cells; degree of raise of papillate surface variable, 1.5-2.5 µm high. Hyphae absent. Ascospores unknown.
COMMENTS* (Jain & Gupta): The present specimen closely compares to Notothyrites airensis Cookson 1947a, but differs mainly in its smaller size, conical form and degree of prominence of ostiole border. Notothyrites setifer Cookson 1947a and N. neyvelii (Ramanujam, 1963b) can be differentiated in having short, aseptate blunt setae in some ostiole border cells.

K&J REMARKS See remarks from Kalgutkar and Jansonius (2000) under Notothyrites denticulatus Ramanujam & Rao 1973.

Trichothyrites padappakarensis was originally described from the Quilon sediments of Kerala (Jain & Gupta, 1970). Rao & Ramanujam (1976) recorded similar type fruiting bodies from the Warkalli beds as a frequent element of the clay and lignite samples of the South Arcot lignite deposit.

Reddy et al. (1982) expressed their agreement with Elsik (1978) that Cookson's (1947a) form genus Notothyrites is indistinguishable from Trichothyrites described earlier by Rosendahl (1943). Accordingly, all the species described under Notothyrites should be incorporated under Trichothyrites. Thus, they proposed the following new combinations: Trichothyrites setifer (Cookson 1947a), T. airensis (Cookson 1947a), T. denticulatus (Ramanujam & Rao 1973), T. echinatus (Rao & Ramanujam 1976) and T. kiandrensis (Selkirk 1975). However, because they did not provide the basionyms, or full bibliographic details of the latter, none of these combinations were validly published.

Jain & Gupta, in their text, identified Pl. 1, fig. 14 as the holotype, which in the text is stated to be curated as slide No. 3450/1; however, in the plate legend, the specimen of fig. 14 is said to be on slide No. 3850/1. It appears that one of these numbers is a typographic error.
